Want to Sell Your Piano?

There could be many reasons for deciding to sell your piano. Maybe you’ve come to the realisation that you’ll never be Chopin, the kids have finally left home and you don’t need to listen to them practising anymore, or you want to upgrade to a newer model.

Whatever your reasons, here are some tips for selling your piano.

Show off Your Piano at its Best

Get your piano tuned and ensure everything is in working order. This may seem strange because as soon as someone moves the piano they are going to get it tuned. But, you want the potential purchaser to be able to hear how your piano sounds. If it sounds great, chances are you’ll get a better price for it and it will sell faster.

Make a list of all its features, like manufacturer, condition, age and history. Is it overstrung or straight strung? You need be ready for any questions a potential purchaser will ask.

Are there any extras that go with your piano? Such as a stool, sheet music or metronome.

Clean, dust and polish it, and remove everything from the top, as the purchaser may want to look inside.

Finally, make the room warm and inviting. If the purchaser is comfortable and relaxed, there is a greater chance you’ll make a sale.

Where Can I Try and Sell My Piano?

There are a few options. You can put an ad in your local paper or larger weekend papers. Another option is to sell it online using Gumtree or eBay; both these options require you to write ads, answer callers’ questions, and organise viewing times. Sometimes there’s also a cost involved.

Another option is to sell through a piano store. Although you might not get quite as much for it as if you sell it privately, the transaction will be completed quicker, payment will be through bank transfer, they’ll cover the transportation costs, and it’s a lot less stressful.
